What it does

It reads daily prices. It enters a position when all of the entry conditions below is true, and it leaves when its exit rule, its stop-loss or its time limit is reached.

Entry rule

All of these must be true on the same day:

  • The close crosses above the highest high of the previous 50 days.
  • Volume is above its 20-day average.

Exit rule

It has no exit signal of its own. It leaves on a stop-loss 10% below the entry, or after 60 days at most.

The idea behind it

Volume rules take a familiar price signal, such as a breakout or a cross, and require heavier than usual trading before acting on it.

The bet it makes

It bets that a price move backed by unusual trading volume is more likely to last.

When it tends to struggle

A volume spike is not always a good sign: it can mark the end of a move or be caused by one-off news. Requiring volume also means fewer trades.

What does Volume Confirmed Breakout exit on?

It has no exit signal of its own. It leaves on a stop-loss 10% below the entry, or after 60 days at most.
