What it does
It reads daily prices. It enters a position when all of the entry conditions below is true, and it leaves when its exit rule, its stop-loss or its time limit is reached.
Entry rule
All of these must be true on the same day:
- The close is above the 50-day average.
- RSI(14) is above 55.
Exit rule
It has no exit signal of its own. It leaves on a stop-loss 10% below the entry, or after 90 days at most.
The idea behind it
Momentum rules look for a stock whose recent moves are strong or turning up, using indicators such as RSI or MACD, and take part while the strength lasts.
The bet it makes
It bets that strength keeps building once a stock has started to move.
When it tends to struggle
Momentum can fade quickly. A rule that buys strength may buy just before the move runs out, and in a sideways market the signals flip back and forth.
Test it on paper
